Therapy

I’m a BACP-accredited, Internal Family Systems (IFS) Level 1 and EMDR-trained psychotherapist offering online and in-person therapy. I bring compassion, honesty, and a depth of psychological awareness to help work through the pain, struggle, and challenge.

My Approach and IFS

I work with the multi-mind theory. Simply put, there’s a part of me that wants to go to the party, and another part of me that wants to stay at home. IFS believes it’s the dynamics between these inner parts of us, and how they relate to the outside world, that causes us to suffer. Getting to know these parts in more detail provides us a framework to work together on the issues you face.

In sessions, I draw on IFS as a core map of the psyche, while integrating Poly Vagal Theory and  EMDR, as somatic awareness tools to support emotional regulation, memory re-consolidation, and body-mind connection. This work is experiential. It is not just talking about problems, but gently tuning in to what’s happening beneath the surface. I’m experienced in working with trauma and PTSD, anxiety, depression, relationship issues, addictive processes, OCD, grief, and neurodiversity.

Our suffering is not just an internal or biological issue. Economic, social, political and relational contexts can have a huge impact on how we feel, and function. I recognize the importance of holding space for the wider forces and powers affecting your wellbeing.

Trauma and Adverse Experiences

“Trauma is not what happens to you, it is what happens inside you as a result of what happens to you.”— Gabor Maté

The legacy of trauma is the inability to live in a safe, trusting connection with others and with ourselves.” -Janina Fisher.

These quotes capture how I view trauma, difficult past experiences and complex childhood’s: it’s not just about the story of what happened, it’s about how those experiences live on inside us in the present. All of the ways in which we learn and remember, whether it through imagery, physical symptoms, thoughts, emotions, values and beliefs, all have the power to isolate us from deep, trusting connection with ourselves, and with others.

IFS offers a way of gently meeting these past experiences, not just by talking about them, but by directly befriending the parts of us that carry the pain, grief, fear, and shame.

My work is facilitative and relational rather than analytical — helping you develop a deeper relationship with your parts. This naturally opens space in your system for safer, more authentic connection with others.

Restoring Hope

My hope is that by meeting and befriending all the protectiveness and pain within yourself, on the flip side there is more access to peace, connectedness, choice, and ease-fulness in life. Relationships with ourselves and others improve, and we can more readily access states of joy and compassion. We meet the inevitable challenges of life with more presence and ease. We know ourselves, we know what we want, and we know how to go about getting it.

Testimonials

“I started my journey with Ben not completely understanding what I was trying to get to the bottom of. I knew I wasn't necessarily feeling emotionally well but knew it was multi-factorial. I spent nearly 6 months speaking with Ben weekly and I can honestly say it has changed my life. Ben allowed the sessions to fit with how I was feeling that week and structured his approach to the session accordingly. He listened and spoke in such a way that made me completely comfortable. Through Ben's kindness, openness and knowledge I was able to open up and subsequently discover sources and strategies to deal with and resolve my discontent”
